Aralen (Generic name-Chloroquine) is a 4-aminoquinoline compound. It is an antimalarial and antiameobic.
Uses: For the treatment of acute attacks of malaria due to P. vivax, P.malariae, P. ovale, and susceptible strains of P. falciparum. It is also used to treatof extraintestinal amebiasis.
Dose: Each 500 mg tablet contains the equivalent of 300 mg chloroquine base.
For Suppression, 500 mg is to be given on the same day of each week.
For acute infection of malaria: Start with 1 g, followed by an additional 500 mg after six to eight hours. Than a single dose of 500 mg on each of two following days. Total dose: 2.5 g chloroquine phosphate or 1.5 g base in three days.
In amebiasis: 1g given daily for two days, then 500 mg daily for at least 2 to 3 weeks.
Possible side effects can be reversible retinal damage, nyctalopia; Nerve type deafness; tinnitus, neuromyopathy, depression of tendon reflexes, Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, Pleomorphic skin eruptions, pruritus, photosensitivity and hair loss and bleaching of hair pigment.
