PRECOSE (acarbose tablets) is an oral alpha-glucosidase inhibitor for use in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Use:
1) Used alone, it is indicated as an adjunct to diet to lower blood glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus where hyperglycemia cannot be managed on diet alone.
2) It may also be used in combination with a sulfonylurea when diet, when it alone or a sulfonylurea do not result in adequate glycemic control.
3) It may be also be used in combination with insulin or metformin.
It has additive action with sulfonylureas, insulin, or metformin.
Dose: initially 25mg thrice daily. It can be increased based on result. Max dose is 100mg thrice daily.
Possible side effects: hypoglycemia, cholestatic jaundice, hypotension, edema, anemia, pallor, fever, rash, chest pain, and abdominal pain, including cramping.
