Trecator-SC (generic name-Ethionamide) is an antibacterial used to treat tuberculosis (TB).
Trecator is indicated for the treatment of active tuberculosis in patients who are resistant to isoniazid or rifampin, or when there is intolerance or toxicity on the part of the patient to other drugs.
Adult dose is 15 to 20 mg/kg/day, administered once daily divided doses, with a maximum daily dosage of 1 gram. It should start with 250mg daily which can be increased according to the condition of the patient.
Possible sides effects are many and some are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, stomatitis, anorexia and weight loss, drowsiness, dizziness, restlessness, headache, pellagra-like syndrome, Hepatitis (with or without jaundice), rash and photosensitivity.
Important: pyridoxine should be given with trecator to reduce side effects.
