Valsartan is an orally active, and specific angiotensin II antagonist acting on the AT1 receptor subtype.

Dosage: In hypertension, Starting dose of valsartan is 80 mg or 160 mg once daily when used alone. Higher doses of 80 mg to 320 mg once daily can also be given. Dose can gradually be reduced over 4 wks.
In Heart Failure, starting dose of Valsartan is 40 mg twice daily. It can be increased to 80 mg and 160 mg twice daily as can be tolerated by the patient. After a heart attack, it may be initiated after 12 hours. The recommended starting dose of Valsartan is 20 mg twice daily.
Possible side effects include headache, hypotension, palpitations, syncope, nausea, and vertigo.
