Frumil (generic -Amiloride) is a potassium-sparing diuretic (an antikaliuretic -diuretic agent) and is used to treat congestive heart failure or high blood pressure.
It is used with thiazide diuretics or other potassium losing-diuretic agents. Frumil acts by restoring serum potassium levels in patients on the potassium losing diuretic. It also prevents development of hypokalemia in patients on digoxin. Amiloride has almost no antihypertensive effect when added to a thiazide.
It should not be used alone but in combination with other drugs. One 5 mg tablet daily should be added to the other BP drugs.
Possible side effects include headache, weakness, fatigue, back pain, chest pain, pain, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, gas pain, loss of appetite and constipation.
