Rifadin (generic name rifampin or rifampicin) is an antitubercular drug. It is bacteriocidal (kills) against the TB bacterium. Rifadin is included in the mainstay of Tb therapy. It is to be given along with other Tb drugs like Isoniazid, ethambutol, pyrazinamide and streptomycin. It can also be used as prophylaxis against meningitis and in treating brucellosis and staph infection.
Special mention can be made of an HIV positive person taking Nevirapine. They should change nevirapine to some other drug like Effavirenz. The treatment should continue for a minimum of 6 months but can be increased on the advice of the doctor.
